Durga Saptashati Chapter 5 in English: The Goddess and the Messengers of Shumbha and Nishumbha

Chapter 5 of Devi Mahatmya — Devi Duta Samvada

Introduction

Durga Saptashati, also known as Devi Mahatmya or Chandi Path, is a sacred Hindu scripture found in the Markandeya Purana. Its thirteen chapters celebrate the power of the Divine Mother and describe her victories over forces that threaten the universe.

The fifth chapter begins a new episode in the scripture. After the defeat of Mahishasura, the demon brothers Shumbha and Nishumbha rise to power. When they hear about the extraordinary beauty and glory of the Goddess, they decide that she should become part of their possession. Their ambition leads to a confrontation with the Divine Mother.

The Story of Durga Saptashati Chapter 5

1. Shumbha and Nishumbha Become Powerful

Shumbha and Nishumbha are two powerful demon brothers who conquer the gods and seize control of their celestial possessions. They take over the authority and treasures that once belonged to the gods, forcing the defeated celestial beings to leave their positions.

The brothers become proud of their power and wealth. They believe that everything valuable in the universe should belong to them.

2. Chanda and Munda See the Goddess

One day, two demon commanders named Chanda and Munda see the Goddess in her magnificent form on a mountain. They are astonished by her beauty, radiance, and divine splendour.

They return to Shumbha and describe what they have witnessed. They tell the demon king that such a remarkable Goddess would be a worthy addition to his collection of treasures and possessions.

3. Shumbha Sends a Messenger

After hearing the report, Shumbha decides that he must obtain the Goddess. He sends his messenger Sugriva to approach her and communicate his proposal.

The messenger speaks of Shumbha's great wealth, power, and victory over the gods. He explains that the demon king possesses many celestial treasures and suggests that the Goddess should accept him as her husband.

4. The Goddess Gives Her Answer

The Goddess listens to the messenger calmly. She does not deny the power and achievements he describes, but she explains that she has made a vow: she will marry only someone who can defeat her in battle and demonstrate that they are her equal in strength.

Her response establishes that she cannot be won through wealth, pride, or commands. Any challenge to her must be faced on the battlefield.

5. The Messenger Returns to Shumbha

Sugriva returns and reports the Goddess's answer to Shumbha. The demon king is displeased because he expects everyone to submit to his authority.

Shumbha and his followers cannot accept that the Goddess has refused his proposal. Their pride prevents them from understanding that she possesses independent will and extraordinary divine power.

6. The Conflict Begins

The chapter establishes the central conflict between the Goddess and the demon brothers. Shumbha and Nishumbha rely on domination and arrogance, while the Goddess remains calm, fearless, and determined to honour her vow.

The events that follow in later chapters describe the demons' attempts to force the Goddess into submission and her successive victories over their commanders and armies.

Spiritual Significance of Chapter 5

Chapter 5 introduces themes of pride, desire, self-respect, and the importance of standing firm in one's principles. The Goddess refuses to let wealth or power determine her choices.

  • Self-respect: The Goddess stands by her vow rather than submitting to the demon king's demands.
  • The danger of arrogance: Shumbha believes his wealth and victories entitle him to whatever he desires.
  • Freedom of choice: The Goddess makes her own decision and clearly communicates her conditions.
  • Inner strength: Her calm response shows that genuine strength does not require anger or fear.
  • Consequences of uncontrolled desire: The demons' refusal to accept her answer sets the stage for their downfall.

Lessons from Durga Saptashati Chapter 5

This chapter teaches us that power and wealth do not give anyone the right to control others. Respecting another person's choices is essential, and pride can prevent people from recognising their own limitations.

The Goddess also demonstrates the importance of staying true to one's principles. Even when approached by someone who claims to possess great power, she remains composed and firm in her decision.

Why Devotees Read Chapter 5

Devotees recite Durga Saptashati during Navratri, Durga Puja, and other occasions dedicated to the Divine Mother. Chapter 5 is important because it begins the story of the Goddess's conflict with Shumbha and Nishumbha, which forms the central narrative of the scripture's remaining chapters.

It also reminds devotees that the Divine Mother cannot be controlled by worldly wealth, status, or force.

Conclusion

Durga Saptashati Chapter 5, Devi Duta Samvada, tells how Shumbha sends a messenger to propose marriage to the Goddess after hearing about her beauty and divine glory. The Goddess responds that she will accept only someone who defeats her in battle. Her answer exposes the arrogance of the demon king and sets the stage for the struggle that follows.

The chapter encourages readers to practise humility, respect the freedom of others, and remain firm in their principles.

Jai Maa Durga! Jai Maa Chandika!
